The first step in learning Astrology is determining your Sun sign! This is where the Sun was located in the zodiac at the time of your birth. Each astrological sign has its own set of strengths and weaknesses, personality traits, and compatible zodiac signs!
The zodiac is a belt-shaped region of the sky that extends approximately 8° north and south of the ecliptic. In Western astrology, and formerly astronomy, the zodiac is divided into the following twelve signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Each section correlates with a zodiac sign through which the sun, moon, and planets pass during the year.
You might think that dates in a horoscope correspond to when the sun passes through each constellation. But they don’t, much of the time, because astrology and astronomy are different systems. Plus, a closer examination of the motion of the Earth, the sun, and the stars, shows the zodiac to be more intricate than you might imagine!

What are the elements?
While reading your horoscopes, you may have noticed the words "earth sign" or "air sign." There are actually four elements in astrology: fire, earth, air, and water. Each of the 12 signs falls into one of the four elements, so three signs are ruled by the same element. Knowing which element rules your sign can help you understand your nature. It can also provide insight into who you get along with best. For instance, despite their differences both Scorpio and Pisces are water signs, so they make excellent romantic partners and friends because they can handle one another's emotional nature.
When learning about the elements, it's important to remember that you are more than just your sun sign. You have an entire chart that contains all 12 signs with varying levels of influence.
